Curandero is a film inspired by the efforts of direct cinema: the minutia of human interaction, the fear of the patient, the doubts of the doctor. At a critical point in the climate crisis, we wanted to make a film that expressed humans’ profound connection with plants. In the Amazon, some species are considered doctors, teachers, sentient beings. A whole medicinal practice emerged around them and has been used for millenia. Its effectiveness is being carefully studied by Western scientists. Curandero takes a closer look as these two systems converge and interact to produce something new.
